Description
Most of us know Puglia for it’s trulli houses and Bari, port for the Greek Island ferries. But few venture further south and yet Puglia’s lower province, the Salento peninsula is pretty special. Full of southern Italian ebullience and a strong mix of culture and tradition. Italians love Salento, Italy’s southern most region bordering the Adriatic sea in the east and the Ionian Sea to the southeast. They love it for it’s great weather, beautiful countryside and idyllic beaches.
This cycling tour in Puglia brings you though the heart of the region. Your tour begins in Matera one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Matera is also known as “la Città Sotterranea” (the Subterranean City). Take time to explore its historical center “Sassi” designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, along with the Park of the Rupestrian Churches and Alberobello, famous for its unique trulli houses with their unique cone shaped roofs.
You will cross the Itria Valley located in the heart of Puglia and pass through remarkably charming villages with white washed trulli houses. Continue until you reach Salento, with its Baroque palaces, and the most beautiful countryside full with olive trees, vineyards and beautiful beaches.
Every town and village has a yearly fiesta and in summer there’s a choice of several to attend each night.
This tour can be tailor made to a shorter or longer holiday.
