Moab, the mountain biking mecca, has a secret. It has fabulous road biking. This spring we’ll take full advantage of its snow-capped mountains, two national parks, the vibrant Colorado River, and, of course, great food. Then we’ll be back again in October.
Roads generally have little traffic and the terrain varies from mild to wild, with flats, rolling hills and steep sections to get your heart pumping. We haven’t found better scenery anywhere. The idea of the Base Camp (thank you Lauren for that name) is to select regions with plentiful riding, great scenery, excellent lodging and accoutrements. We have found it in spades in Moab. The hardest job is culling out good rides in favor of the truly great ones.
Such great routes include a spin down the Colorado River and a trip to both national parks (Arches and Canyonlands). We’ll also tackle a climb in the La Sal Mountains that locals call “the big ugly,” riding among rock pinnacles known as “The Priest and Nuns.” Cyclists adore this region’s beautiful redrock canyon scenery, raging rivers and stunning vistas.
