Description
The South-west corner of New Brunswick is home to the charming and tranquil Fundy Isles, an archipelago of islands of stunning natural beauty. We'll begin our tour by providing free transportation from the cities of Fredericton and Saint John, New Brunswick, to the town of St. Stephen, on New Brunswick's Maine border. From here we follow the Fundy coast to the genteel town of St. Andrews, before island hopping to Deer Island and Campobello Island, before ending the tour on the beautiful Grand Manan Island. Colourful fishing wharves, rocky cliffs, lonely lighthouses, bird-watching and whale sightings await your arrival on the Fundy Isles tour.
Day 1: St. Stephens to St. Andrews - 40 km
After bringing all participants to St. Stephens, we'll have a leisurely ride along the Fundy coast and a lakeside bike path to the lovely summer seaside town of St. Andrews. Step back in time as you wander its historic streets and soak in the atmosphere. We'll spend the night at a campground in St. Andrews with stunning views out over the Bay of Fundy from right outside our tent doors.
Day 2: St. Andrews to Deer Island Point (Deer Island) - 70 km
Today we'll leave St. Andrews and continue along the coast to the town of St. George, before heading down to our first ferry of the trip, to Deer Island. We'll cross this island of working fishing villages and see Old Sow, the largest whirlpool in the western hemisphere. We'll finish the day at a campground at Deer Island Point - from here you can see across the straight to Maine.
Day 3: Deer Island Point to Herring Cove (Campobello Island) - 46 km
For our third day, we'll cross another ferry and explore Campobello Island, a favourite holiday spot of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. You are free to explore as much or as little of the island as you would like, with side roads, hidden coves, and lighthouses waiting to be discovered, as well as the wonderful Roosevelt International Park, complete with FDR's former 34 room cottage. We'll end the day at Herring Cove Provincial Park's beautiful campground.
Day 4: Herring Cove to North Head (Grand Manan Island) - 54 km
Our fourth day takes us on three ferries! We'll cross from Campobello Island back to Deer island, which we'll cross taking another route, and take a ferry back to the mainland. From here it's across to Black's Harbour, where we'll take our final ferry for the day - a sizeable one at that - and finish the day just past the ferry dock on Grand Manan Island. Here we'll have another beautiful campground perched on the cliffs, high above the crashing waves of the Bay of Fundy.
Day 5: Grand Manan Island Day Trip - up to 55 km
Our final day will be a day trip of cycling Grand Manan Island, where you are free to explore the cliffs, beaches and coves of the rocky island. The day can be as long or as short as you would like - the island is yours to discover. This is a prime area for bird watchers and whale watchers alike; expect plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife. If you're interested in doing a whale-watching tour, this can be arranged for the day. In the afternoon free transportation back to your starting point will be available.
