Follow the meandering River Charente and cycle through prestigious Cognac vineyards with opportunities to taste the finest brands, including a visit to the famous Hennessy Cognac house. Gentle hills provide scenic views, and there’s an opportunity to upgrade your accommodation.

Day 1 Arrive Le Gond Pontouvre

Your holiday starts with a transfer to the 2-star hotel and restaurant le Moulin Neuf at Le Gond Pontouvre, superbly located at the edge of the Touvre spring. Dine on the terrace soothed by the sound of water.

Day 2 Le Gond Pontouvre to Bassac (25 miles)

Head north to Dorgeville and the impressive Roman amphitheatre, then on to Rouillac for lunch. Continue via Merignac to reach Bassac and the Hôtel l’Essille with its lovely gardens and locally renowned restaurant.

Day 3 Day trip from Bassac (21 miles)

Follow the river to St Simon and visit the Gabare boat museum with an optional riverboat trip. Cycle to St Simeux for lunch before continuing to Châteauneuf and circling through pretty hamlets on your return to Bassac.

Day 4 Bassac to Cognac (25 miles)

Pass through Jarnac, perhaps visiting the Courvoisier distillery and François Mitterand Museum. Head south to Segonzac and back through Roissac to your hotel at Châteaubernard on the outskirts of Cognac. Alternatively you can upgrade to the luxurious Château de l’Yeuse.

Day 5 Day trip from Cognac (30 miles)

Ride through vineyards and lush forests past the Abbey de Fontdouce to St Bris des Bois. Follow a small river valley to rejoin the banks of the Charente, then skirt the town of Cognac through Châteaubernard. Alternatively take an in-depth tour of the city and enjoy a Cognac tasting with complimentary tickets to the Hennessy Cognac house.

Day 6 Cognac to Le Gond Pontouvre (30 miles)

Meander along the valley of the Charente to St Simon, then cycle across country to return to le Moulin Neuf. Relax on your final night at this charming hotel and enjoy the seasonal food at its excellent restaurant.

Add an extra stop between Bassac and Cognac at the Château de Mesnac, a period chambre d’hôte where your host will guide you enthusiastically through a Cognac tasting and provide an evening meal from their own seasonal fresh produce.

Day 4: Upgrade to the 4-star Château de l’Yeuse at Cognac.
